I got back from Gloucestershire (via London, where money seems to just osmose out of me) today, and on the journey back this song came up on my mp3 player’s shuffle. I then proceeded to play it about a thousand more times. It was written in 2004 in reaction to what people (well, mostly the media, I think) said about the death of Ronald Reagan,...

You just have to be sure you’re doing the right thing. I mean it’s very easy to forget - she’s just sitting there in the pub with her new friends and her new life and her new hair, and it’s been five years but you’d know just to look at her. I wasn’t even sure it were her at first, I was ready to walk away but she smiled and called me over and we said...

Gut-level Legislation, or, Redistribution
Print
While n+1 welcomes the new financial regulatory bill passed last week by Congress, we think it’s important to remember that real financial reform will come through taxation, which it is our democratic right to regulate to reflect the values we hold most dear. Toward that end, we are posting Mark Greif’s essay on redistribution from Issue 4.

“
One unfortunate artistic development darkens the last period of Gogol’s life. In 1847 he published his last work, Selected Passages from Correspondence with Friends. This was a new departure with clear purpose. In his mood of growing self-criticism and religiosity he had begun to feel several needs in one: to repudiate the frivolity of his earlier works, to explain his meanings and...

Officer Jim Kurring: (talking to himself, although we don’t know this until the monologue ends) Let me tell you something. This is not an easy job. I get a call on the radio from dispatch. It’s bad news…and it stinks. But this is my job, and I love it. Because I want to do well. In this life and in this world, I want to do well…and I want to help people. And I might get...

Wake up with fingerprints all over me, and an arm that isn’t mine sticking out from somewhere that I can’t make out. I’m on my back and the hand on the end of the arm keeps making a grabbing motion. Fingers fling themselves out and wrap themselves around thin air, then relax again, sullenly. Shifting, I see the rest of Linda. She’s wearing fishnets but has no pants on, and I don’t think this...
